The standout moments from this year’s Golden Globes
The start of another year brings with it a number of inevitabilities. People will desperately be trying to cling onto what is left of their New Year resolutions and, the back to work blues will have started to set in, but the start of the year does have some positives including the start of the awards season.
This year’s Golden Globes kicked off the 2019 season in style on Sunday evening, with a star-studded affair taking place in California. Hosted by Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Andy Samberg, the event celebrates the very best of film and television and was broadcast to millions across the world.
Here at Inspirational London we love everything to do with awards’ season and have picked out some of our stand-out moments from the first one of the year.
The Brits clean up
It was a wonderful night for all the winners at the ceremony, and a significant amount of those who went home with one of the coveted awards were flying the flag for Britain. Giving us something to get excited about back home, the Brits really cleaned up in the ‘Best Performance in a Motion Picture – musical or comedy’ category. First Christian Bale walked away with the award for his superb portrayal of former American Vice-president, Dick Cheney in Vice. Olivia Colman then won the actress award in this category for her work as Queen Anne in recently released The Favourite.
The Television element of the awards also saw success for British stars. It goes without saying that The Bodyguard, which drew in 10.4 million viewers in the first night and achieved the highest amount of viewing figures for a BBC drama for over a decade, was victorious. And, the show’s Richard Madden was successful in the ‘Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama.’ Another television winner was Ben Wishaw in the ‘Supporting Actor’ category for his role as Norman Josiffe in A Very English Scandal.
Queen movie celebrates spirit of Freddie
Up against the likes of A Star is Born, perhaps one of the surprise winners of the night was Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. The film, which charts the rise of one of the world’s most famous rock bands, took home two gongs including the prestigious ‘Best Motion Picture’ award. The film was a box office smash and made a star of its lead, Rami Malek, whose interpretation of the legendary Mercury has made him one of the most sought after actors on the planet. He won the ‘Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama’ for this role and dedicated his award to Freddie who passed away in 1991.
Idris Elba drops 007 hint
Speculation regarding the identity of the next James Bond has been rife since Daniel Craig first announced he would be departing from the role after the next outing from everyone’s favourite spy. The currently untitled 25th Bond film is scheduled for a 2020 release but Luther actor, Idris Elba may have dropped a big hint. Elba is the bookies’ favourite for the role, and at the Globes posted a selfie of himself and Craig with the caption ‘awks.’ Could this have been a hint at his future role? Or was he purposely trolling fans? Only time will tell! Of course, no awards show is complete without a look at the night’s outfits.
